Pair of George III Silver Pepper Casters

A superb pair of George III silver pepper casters.

Each has a traditionally styled plain round body, bellied half-way up, standing on a plain round base. Each has a detachable pierced lid with a round silver finial on the top.

This is an excellent pair of peppers, made by a very good silversmith. The first thing you notice when you pick them up is their superior weight. Then, if you look carefully, you can see a slight difference in height and width between the two finials on the top of the lids. This suggests one was made for black pepper, the other for the stronger cayenne.

This marvellous pair of George III silver pepper casters was made in 1765 by Robert Peaston of London.
